Discovering the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while contributing to spread a positive message about the future of our planet through picture and video sharing —this is the idea behind Mapting, a new mobile app developed jointly by Soka Gakkai International (SGI) and Earth Charter International (ECI).
Mapting, a contraction of "mapping" and "acting", invites you to look for the many things people do to achieve the SDGs and take pictures or videos to share these activities on a world map. For Sarah Dobson, ECI Youth Projects Coordinator and co-creator of the App, Mapting is about sharing solutions;
Created to share positive actions and browse worldwide solutions that will help make the 17 SDGs a reality by the target of 2030, Mapting was also designed in such a way that each step, from the home page to the photo sharing process, brings an opportunity for everyone to learn about the SDGs and the principles of the Earth Charter.
Aligning the SDGs with an ethical framework such as the Earth Charter offers a deeper understanding of the values needed to lead the transition towards more just, sustainable and peaceful societies.
The launch of Mapting was announced on November 10th, 2016, at an event titled "Youth boosting the promotion and implementation of the SDGs" held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Organised by the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations, in collaboration with SGI and ECI, the event highlighted the critical role of youth in the success of the SDGs and the importance of creating space for young people everywhere to take part in the movement for sustainable development. Mapting received enthusiastic feedback and strong support from participants as a great tool to engage youth in this challenge.
Mapting is a joint production between Soka Gakkai International and Earth Charter International, two organisations which share common values and are actively engaged in Education for Sustainable Development. For over 15 years, both organisations have been collaborating on the creation of awareness-raising exhibitions and shared examples of so-called ordinary individuals who have succeeded in taking action for change.
The Earth Charter Initiative (ECI) is a global network of people, organisations and institutions that participate in promoting and implementing the values and principles of the Earth Charter – an ethical framework for building a just, sustainable, and peaceful global society. It seeks to inspire in all people a new sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility for the well-being of the whole human family, the greater community of life and future generations.
Earth Charter International works to advance the Earth Charter Initiative’s mission and vision, and support the broader initiative.
Soka Gakkai International (SGI) is a worldwide Buddhist association that actively promotes peace, culture and education centered on respect for the dignity of life. As a broad-based grassroots movement, SGI focuses its efforts on awareness-raising and community education programs on the following themes:
As a non-governmental organisation with formal ties to the United Nations, SGI also collaborates with other civil society organisations and intergovernmental agencies.
